Cristiano Ronaldo breaks European Championship goalscoring record

Cristiano Ronaldo

Online Betting Sites – Cristiano Ronaldo has become the all-time leading scorer in European Championship history, bagging a brace in his side’s 3-0 win over Hungary.

Ronaldo began Euro 2020 level with Michel Platini on nine goals. For much of the Hungary game it did not seem likely he would break the record, with Portugal being frustrated by their opponent’s resolute back five.

However, towards the end of the second half they finally got a breakthrough with Raphael Guerreiro’s deflected effort making it 1-0. Soon after, Ronaldo took centre stage. First he converted a penalty after Rafa Silva was hauled down by Willi Orban, smashing the ball past Peter Gulacsi’s outstretched arms.

Then, with a few minutes left he scored again. This time he finished off a free-flowing attacking move, combining nicely with Bruno Fernandes before rounding the goalkeeper and tapping home. The brace moves him up to 11 goals in the Euros with the forward netting in five successive tournaments: 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and now, 2020 (or 2021) – a feat not matched by any other player.

Ronaldo looks in the mood to extend his lead over Platini as the tournament progresses, although he will need to be in fine form with Portugal set for some tricky fixtures. Next up they face Germany on Saturday before taking on world champions France on Wednesday – a contest that is a re-run of the Euro 2016 final.

The next goal that Ronaldo will have in his sights is becoming the all-time scorer in international football. That honour is currently enjoyed by Iran legend Ali Daei who managed 109 goals during his remarkable 23-year career. Ronaldo’s brace moved him up to 106 strikes for Portugal, just three shy of Daei’s tally.

It seems only a matter of time before he adds that record to his already lengthy list of accomplishments.
